Family friendly Melbourne

Melbourne is full of surprises and thrives on creativity and innovation. Whether you’re travelling as a couple or looking for family friendly activities, there’s so many things to do in Melbourne, from sightseeing tours, checking out the zoos and wildlife parks, to interactive tours of Melbourne's history.

Really cool things to do with the kids in Melbourne

  • A visit to the Old Melbourne Gaol is a must-do activity when you visit Melbourne. You get to experience Melbourne’s criminal past and what it was like to be arrested, charged and locked up in a cell. See how prisoners lived and where 133 people were hanged to death. You can also be part of a mock court hearing for notorious Australian bush ranger Ned Kelly.
  • The Melbourne aquarium is an underwater wonderland of brightly colored fish, sharks, penguins and much more.

Take the helm on Polly Woodside tallship in Melbourne
Get on board the Polly Woodside tallship

  • Polly Woodside is Melbourne’s favourite tall ship and is an interactive nautical experience. This majestic tallship is 140 years old and is in drydock at Melbourne’s Docklands – just a short walk up from Crown Casino centre. Go onboard and be part of interesting and very funny tour. The kids love it – so do the grown-ups.
  • Go to the Eureka Sky Deck 88 which takes you 300 metres high to get 360° city views. While the views won't necessarily excite the kids, the experience of being so high up will.
  • ‚ÄčTake a river cruise up the Yarra River and see Melbourne from a different perspective.

  • The whole family will love boarding the Puffing Billy Railway which is Australia’s flavourite steam train. Puffing Billy will take you through the forests and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges.
  • If you plan on visiting a few attractions while in Melbourne, I would recommend you buy a Melbourne attractions pass. This way you can do various tours and activities without paying separate entry fees.

  • The Melbourne Zoo which is one of the longest-running attractions and is a must visit for any animal lover.
  • ‚ÄčAlternatively, head to Werribee Open Range Zoo where animals roam freely, and you can see them from the safety and comfort of a safari bus. It’s brilliant!
  • Take a ghost tour through some of Melbourne's scariest places. You'll discover haunted locations, hidden lanes, spooky buildings and streets.
